One of the things I stress at the initial evaluation is the importance of “doing a little, a lot”.
Frequency is a good way to build the total volume of activity without exacerbating an injury.
It’s like eating. Having 2000 calories at once isn’t going to feel good. Better to have spread the calories throughout the day.
Or it’s like drinking water. Drinking 8 glasses of water through the day is good for the body. Drinking 8 glasses of water all at once…
Another reason why it’s important to do a little, a lot, is because it’s a more efficient way for the body to heal after a surgery or acute injury.
Collagen recovers every 3-6 hours. So it’ll need to be re-stretched or re-loaded at this interval to optimize the effectiveness of the exercise/intervention.
And then there’s synovial fluid, the cardiovascular system, the interstium, and the nervous system. These systems also thrive on frequent, intervallic input.
It’s like hitting the “refresh” button for the body.
So whether you’re post-op or just got injured, focus on doing a little, a lot.
